Blogger of the Week: Melissa P. of The Key to Chic
Friday, October 7th, 2011
We are obsessed with Melissa P. of The Key to Chic. Not only does the fashion trend forecaster and secondhand clothing dealer from Southern California share our love for boho-chic clothing and accessories, but she also has great taste in shoes. She recently worked a pair of Isabel Marant-inspired leggings (from Asos) with Bakers booties–which made for a perfect example of how one can rock retro fringe in a modern way. We can’t wait to cop the look! First step? Scooping up those super-versatile booties.
According to Melissa, “These suede boots are the newest addition to my closet. They’re simple and versatile, unlike some of my shoe selections, yet I can imagine them with just about all of the outfits I’ll be wearing as the weather begins to cool. I’m excited to pair them with everything from my new gorilla-sleeved coat to floral dresses with tights, or even vintage silky blouses and flared denim.”

London Fashion Week 2011: Street Style Trends
Tuesday, September 27th, 2011
London Fashion Week is a mecca for those style connoisseurs with elitist tendencies. The utilitarian and granny chic come out to play in their elegantly understated ensembles, and with them is a lesson in texture and statement pieces. When your wardrobe consists of black, gray, tan, and black, you understand the importance of fabric.
One of my favorite trends amongst the utilitarian show-goers was the pop up of neutral. All black ensembles were complemented with a subtle touch of tan.
Oversized fur jackets with skin-tight leggings were paired together by countless daring fashionistas, making the duo an unexpected fall must-have.
Dedicated trend-setting types gave into some especially exotic statement pieces from bone-replica heels to comically over sized coats, while a few Bleach lovers kept the NYFW trend going with neon locks.
Midi skirts topped the trend charts in predictable but well received flowing asymmetrical hem lines, ultra sleek textures, and neutral tones.
Understated shapes, muted colors, and silky soft fabrics make fall the season for classic elegance. Don’t be afraid to give your street style a little edge by mixing in chunky heels, bold patterns, eccentric statement pieces, and little pops of color in unexpected places.
Weekly Wrap-Up: My Black Suede Shoes
Saturday, September 10th, 2011
If your closet is heavy in black, black and more black, you’re in luck; this season, designers are catering to your comfort zone–by turning out bunches of boots, booties, flats and more in your choice shade. But, decidedly the edgiest of all neutrals, black goes soft this fall; unfussy suede styles trump studded, spiked and heavily-metaled leather shoes across the board. So, while you may have to add to your cave-like quarters in order to look on-trend, just think of the time you’ll save walking through metal detectors…
Best with tights and leggings, the Bakers Jollen has a low heel that makes it comfortable enough to wear every day–and a slouchy, fold-over shaft that gives it a fun, ’80s flair.
The Bakers Susie is simple and sexy–making it the perfect complement to most any night-on-the-town ensemble.
Cute with jeans, plaids and any of fall’s rustic wearables, the Bakers Kingston wedge is bound to be a regular go-to for trendsetters this season.

Blogger of the Week: Coach Jones of Ego No Ceiling
Friday, May 6th, 2011
If you too get a daily email from WhoWhatWear, you understand why blogger Coach Jones’ (of Ego No Ceiling) recent look caught our eye. Just yesterday, the site—which highlights street style, celebrity style, runway trends and more—covered the oh-so-hot “neons and neutrals” trend, as seen on the Spring runways of Jil Sander, Max Mara and Cacharel. While a number of stars, including Jessica Alba, have started to work the combo, we’d seen very few without a stylist wear it well—until we saw this pic of Jones. The pairing of her highlighter-yellow fringe tank with gray Forever 21 leggings and nude-hued accessories—including Bakers platform oxfords—is spot-on for spring. If she was wearing shades and toting a tiny dog, we’d swear she was an A-lister…

Weekly Wrap-Up: Fur? Get It
Saturday, December 18th, 2010
With a slew of fashion’s top designers—including Karl Lagerfeld, for Chanel—relying heavily on faux fur to carry out their luxe-look visions for Fall 2010, my long-time staple is finally being hyped as “trend”. I have long piled-on faux fur pieces—including a chubby coat, my warmest hat and a fluffy handbag—and, thanks to its obvious presence on recent runways, I love that I can now easily find the look at my favorite stores. Bakers, for one, has turned out a mass of must-have faux fur-embellished boots—a take on my obsession that I have yet to try, but plan to incorporate into my collection via these lush styles.
To me, the Bakers Elvie screams “fabulous”. I cannot wait to pair these statement fur-and-leather platform boots with dark denim and my camel-colored cape over the holidays, and chunky cable knits and leggings in the chilly months to come.
Seemingly a moccasin-inspired boot, I am most excited that the Bakers Altamont will help me maintain my signature bohemian look through winter—which has been difficult. When I pair the fur-heavy boot with skinnies, an oversized poncho and ample jewelry, I won’t have to worry if my look is definitive of warmth trumping style; it’ll be the best of both worlds.
The Wild Pair Lush is like two boots in one. With the topline left up, the faux fur-trimmed boot will pair perfectly with all of my recently-acquired sweater dresses. When folded over, denim and a leather jacket will best complete my winter-perfect ensemble.

Blogger of the Week: Jennifer E.
Friday, November 26th, 2010
Though a very new face on LOOKBOOK.nu, two of the three looks Jennifer E. has posted on the site so far have featured Bakers boots—so, of course, we’re already fans.
Titled “If My Heart Was a Compass, You’d Be North“, her most recent personal style pic is undoubtedly our fave to date. We love her smart combination of trends, from her army-green dress from H&M (we can’t get enough of the military trend!) to her oversized snakeskin bag. We’re even inspired by how she worked her peep-toe Hidee ankle boots: with ankle-skimming leggings, and black polish on her toes.
Describing herself in her LOOKBOOK.nu bio as “very blonde” and “very small”, we’d also add that she’s “very well on her way to becoming one of our personal style icons”; we can’t wait to see what the “16-year-old art student from Philadelphia” will wear next!

Celeb Style: M.I.A.
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010
Since the first time I saw M.I.A burst onto my television screen over four years ago in her “Bucky Done Gun” music video, I can honestly say I have never seen a woman rock tribal/Eastern/hip hop-inspired threads the way she had. The ultra-vibrant colors of each of her outfits looked like a delicious rainbow of silks and satins I could only dream to pull off in my own college town universe. But M.I.A.’s style, like her music, is ever-evolving, constantly sampling different genres and completely original.
Her trademark sunglasses and conductor’s hats always seem to grab my attention but it’s her outfits that really exude her creativity as an artist and as a woman with a strong connection to her heritage. Always opting for loud, tribal prints and trends typically donned by early ninties rappers, M.I.A. could grab the attention of a blind man. Feeling a little bit intimidated by her colorful, even eccentric style? That’s okay, you can still pull off a little bit of M.I.A. style without jeopardizing your reputation as a fashion conscious dresser.
Here are some tips for getting the everyday version of her look: Opt for black, rather than primary colored spandex leggings, they will definitely give your outfit an edge without looking too bold. Patterns are always a must, but chose either a printed top or bottoms, not both. Mix larger pieces of gold jewelry with your accessories and don’t be afraid to add unusual accessories into your ensemble as well. Conductor hats are always a good choice and if M.I.A gives it the go-ahead, it’s safe to say it will be in style for a while.
